Studienkolleg: what it is and how to prepare for the C-Test
If your school-leaving certificate does not qualify you for direct admission to your chosen German university, Studienkolleg may be one possible route. This guide explains the general idea and the language part of an entrance examination.
What is a Studienkolleg?
A Studienkolleg is a preparatory programme for some international applicants. Students build their German-language and subject knowledge before taking the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP). Whether you need this route depends on the country and type of your school qualification, as well as your chosen university and degree programme.
Start by checking your qualification in the DAAD overview of Studienkollegs and its admissions database. Then confirm the requirements with the university itself. Courses are also grouped by subject area: for example, T courses focus on technical and mathematical subjects, M on medicine and natural sciences, W on economics, and G on humanities. Course options and rules can differ.
What is a C-Test?
A C-Test is one possible way to assess German proficiency. In a typical task, parts of words are removed and you restore them using grammar and the meaning of the whole passage. For example: Die Studierenden berei____ sich auf die Prü____ vor. You need more than vocabulary: endings, compound words and connections between sentences matter too.
There is no single required format used by every institution. For example, Studienkolleg TU Darmstadt describes a C-Test with four short passages, while Studienkolleg Bochum lists a C-Test, listening and a written component. These are examples from specific institutions, not a promise that every entrance exam is the same. Check current sample papers, dates and requirements with your chosen Studienkolleg.
How to prepare
- Strengthen the basics. Review articles and case endings, verb forms, word order and common vocabulary. It is easier to restore a missing part when you recognise the grammatical form in context.
- Read the whole sentence. Work out the general meaning first, then check the part of speech, ending and agreement. Do not guess from the neighbouring letter alone.
- Practise with a timer. After untimed exercises, try sample tasks under exam-like conditions. Use your institution's materials for the time limit and number of questions.
- Review mistakes by type. Note what caused each error: unfamiliar vocabulary, grammar, a compound word or inattention. Then practise that area.
- Use official sample papers. Start with the admissions page of your chosen Studienkolleg. This collection of German entrance-exam samples may help you find extra practice, but confirm all requirements with the institution.
Practising German
For preparation, alternate between reading, grammar and vocabulary practice. Daxling includes a C-Test trainer and a grammar reference in the app. These are learning tools, not an official practice exam for any specific Studienkolleg.
